Kotlin YouTube – Load and Cache Images Picasso (Ep 3)

Episode 2:

Loading images and caching them in Android can always be a tedious task to perform manually. Luckily we have the help of the open source community to provide us with very useful libraries such as Picasso. This library has been tried and tested in many production applications so you can put your trust in it. In today’s lesson we configure our app to load images and also flesh out our row items. Enjoy.

  • Don't suppose you have any beautiful videos on coroutines? Struggling with an API call and running some calculations, with the return needing to be displayed in the UI. Thanks! 🙂

  • Is there a way I can Cache whole Recycler Views, so that I don't have to retrieve data from the Cloud at the app start everytime? Or do I have to save the data then in a SQLiteDatabase?

  • Picasso has changed its syntax I guess (im not sure) but for those who are having trouble at 12:40 the method has changed from Picasso.with().load().into() to Picasso.get().load().into().

  • I'm kinda new in Kotlin and I'm trying to understand why do you access the fields without Getters and Setters. Is that a built in Kotlin feature that avoids a lot of boilerplate code or you are doing it for simplicity while declaring your classes?

    Matteo Minardi June 26, 2020 12:29 pm Reply
  • Hi Brian, to make circle image without import any library you can use this class: https://gist.github.com/julianshen/5829333 and make imageview circle with picasso in one line of code: Picasso.with(context).load(url).transform(new CircleTransform()).into(imageView);

    Thanks for your videos.

  • You are doing a great job of making quality content. I am a web developer I'm using j2ee, spring and hibernate and i did some android development last year, it was very tricky at first to get all individual activities to work together but i finally did it.
    By watching your kotlin android essentials series reminded me of some android experience.
    Anyways, thanks a lot.

  • It is really IMPORTANT question! Few days ago I finish template project where Picasso shows to us local images. but it don't preload images. so instead of images you see placeholder images and only after it local image. I decided to add to layoutmanager extra space but it started to lagging during scrolling recycler view.

    Brian, how we can preload images and scroll recycler view with images smoothly?? pls everyone lets solve this problem! I spent for about 30 hours to trying so solve it. but I didn't find solution! also It question of caching and loading images. so that question will really helpful to everyone.
